Chuck

I have a small home network, two computers sharing a cable
modem. My personal computer is an AMD athlon with XP
pro. My wife has another Athlon with Win2kpro. I used to
have 2kpro on this machine, and everything worked just
peachy, file and printer sharing, and even had native
drivers for my antique H/P LJ5lx. Had a hard drive crash,
and decided to try Xp pro. BIG MISTAKE!!!!! Now my wife
has to put her printing tasks on a floppy and bring them
in here to print, and the XP drivers will not work on the
laserjet. The Xp machine doesn't see itself on the
workgroup, and her machine sees only itself!I have tried
everything I know, and am getting baldheaded. The XP
trouble shooters are USELESS! Can anyone help me? I also
have a similar problem with my in-laws network. My wife
is threatening mayhem, and my father-in-law has offered to
help!

I'm sorry that you've had such problems with XP. Without any details
of your network setup, it's hard for anyone to say what's wrong.

I've written a web site that should help you solve the problem:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.
