I have a 2-year old P4 computer with XP on it, and just bought a new
Dual-core Computer with Vista on it. I wanted to take the drive out of the
old machine and use it the new one, (temporarily replacing the vista drive)
but when I went to boot it up it gave me the Blue Screen with an error. I
shouldn't need to adjust the pins since they were both used as Master Drives,
and I'm not connecting them both at the same time. Is there something in the
BIOS that needs to be set, and how do I go about that. Or is it not possible
to do? I see no reason why it shouldnt work, but I'm not a techie; I hope its
a minor detail I'm missing. Thanks for any help

You're actually missing quite a MAJOR issue: The installed version of XP on
your old HD is setup for your previous computer and all its
hardware......................................

This is expected if the motherboards are different i.e different processor
styles Intel / AMD, different hard drive configurations ide / sata / scsi
(assume this is not the case with you as able to swop hdd)

There could be incompatible drivers being loaded from hdd with new
motherboard.

Easiest solution is putting in hdd and boot from XP CDROM and choosing
repair option and this will repair settings for new motherboard.

However you will have an Activation issue as the hardware has changed
considerably. If the original P4 came from OEM supplier i.e DELL or HP then
legally you cant do this.

The first two lines should tell us what is causing the error.

Hi,

It's not a minor detail, it'd be a major one. The XP install is built around
the current hardware, not the one you are sticking it in. You'd have to do,
at the very least, a repair install under the new hardware so that the
system files are rebuilt specific to it.

The key is in these lines, "I see no reason why it shouldn't work, but I'm
not a techie"
The only option you have is to perform a repair install on the XP drive
while it's in the new PC, the hard drive controller drivers on the old
system are not compatible with the ones on the new PC. After you do this,
the XP drive may or may not boot again when you put it back in it's original
PC.

I agree with the several answers you already have to your question, but
it seems to me the real point is *why* do you want to do that? Sounds
to me like you are trying to solve a problem with the wrong solution.

What's the problem you want to solve?
