xp and usb mass storage

Digital camera used to work fine on XP home PC. Then
suddenly stopped working. In device manager, the usb mass
storage element had an exclamation mark next to it. When I
tried to re-install driver it kept failing - an 'inf' file
was corrupted. I have tried installing other usb devices -
a card-reader and the same thing happens. I don't have an
xp disc only a 'restore disc' and i believe this will lose
all my degree-related data.
Can i reinstall the whole usb set-up somehow?
 
Hi Colin.

In the device manager under the USB controller delete the USB root hub this
will be re-installed when you re-start your computer.
