XP and USB devices

Short and to the point using XP Home....

My box has a:, c:, d: and e: drive letters. My network has f:, g:,
and h: drives. If I connect a USB drive(camera) it will not advance
to the next avaiable drive(i:) and I can't d/l the pics. The camera
software says it can not find a camera.

If I asign my network to, say, m:, n: and o: then plug in the usb
device, it will advance and show up as f:. Is that the way it's
supposed to be? Am I supposed to leave a gap for usb devices acting
as a drive between the box and the network or is there something goofy
going on here?

And what is that thing that comes up in the notification area that has
a green arrow and some kind of box? It says my "usb device can now
safely be disconnected".

thanks

Rick

My system is configured with hard drives C: to F:, CDR as R: and CDRW as W:.
When I attach my camera with USB cable it shows up as G: which is what you
would expect. The green arrow recommendation is to stop the device before
unplugging. When I used Win/ME it created all sorts of confusion if I just
unplugged the device, so I am in the habit of stopping it first.

No idea about the problem with the network drive letters not having a gap,
but if it no trouble to permanently assign then higher, just do it and
forget about the problem.

Search in Help and Support for "change drive letter XP" and go the Microsoft

Thanks. Found this in help.....

"Network drives are assigned letters from Z to A, and local drives
(your hard drive and removable storage devices) are assigned letters
from A to Z."

I guess that's a clue that there should be a gap between your box and
your network so something like a camera can be plugged in a usb port
and be recognized.
