Hi:

I have 2 machines both running XP Home with the latest SP. On one, CDs with a setup.exe
work fine, and on the other they don't! I have tried copying the whole setup package (from
CD) from one machine to another, but still setup.exe wont activate.

Is there some setting, somewhere deep in XP, that tells it NOT to respond to setup.exe,
and if so what is it and how do I change it?

Best

Thanks, Rick. I wish that was the problem. No, the problem is it wont execute a
"setup.exe", which means that I cant install many applications!

Perhaps you have a security program that is preventing running of
executables. I'd look to a third-party program rather than to XP
settings, unless you have XP Pro and Group Policies in effect.

For the information of others who may have the same problem, after much research it turned
out that the Virus Checker (Avast) was the culprit. Somehow it was set to check CDs and
would block all programs that attempted to change the program files or install new
applications.

Resetting it solved the problem.

So the culprit *was* third-party security software. Thanks for posting
the solution. It will help others.
