XP and modems

Ihave dual boot 98se and XP. Modem works fine on 98.On XP
error message says modem is not connected. Check plugs and
cables it says. Any ideas please!

Install an XP driver for the modem. See the manufacturer's WEBsite for
that, and for HELP tips and FAQs.
 
Installing XP drivers doesn't always work regarding modems
An IT technician I work with built a PC for his inlaws & had a devils own job trying to get a modem to work with XP, he had to try several different modems.....
 
My XP suddenly decides to do this as well. I use an external modem and one
morning this big beige box didn't know it had a modem. I tried about 5 times
to re-install it.. going through the motions of having to go look for it..
On the 6th time I also put a link on the front end. I click that and it
dials away. It won't dial automaticly via Explorer or Mailwasher or
Express..but they work fine once I have clicked on the account link on the
front end.
This is one of three weird things this XP has done.. along with opening a
folder upon startup..
