i am not a very computer savvy person and have recently
gotten a new lap top that should give me the mobility
that i need. problem is i typed up a document the other
day on ms-works sent it as an attachment on an email to
an associate for his ok, saved it to a cd, and then
emailed it to myself @ home. my associate had problems
opening the attachment and when he did it was jibberish
(o's, squares,x's, and numbers. the same happened at my
home (windows 98)and the cd produces the same results,
when played on my home pc. when printed a normal one page
takes about 10 pgs. of jibberish, some with just 2 lines
on them. the cd and the saved document produces the
correct document on the lap top. i am sure it is
something simple and it's just my inexperience. your help
would be greatly appreciated.
thank you,
ft

Microsoft uses code when you use a word processor to create
a file. MS Word uses a different code than does MS WORKS
and these are different from the codes used by Corel with
WoredPerfect. The file extension placed on the file by
default will show this, WORD uses .doc while WORKS uses
..wps.

But these programs can save files with other formats that
can be read by other programs. Sometimes you need to get a
conversion plug-in and sometimes you just need to use the
proper procedure to open the file.

Open your word processor (or whatever type of program that
created the file) and then use the program to find and open
the file (rather than double-clicking the file) and then the
word processor will decode and open the file if it can.

Alternatively, you can use the "save as" command when you
save a file to send and use a universal file format than is
read by all word processors, RTF (rich text) will handle
most formatting that is common, but may not support a lot of
fancy features such as word wrapping on graphics. But most
programs will open it without problems.

It is always a good practice to say what program was used
and the file format used when you send a file attachment,
saves a lot of questions and helps solve he problem.

MS has free readers that can be downloaded for spreadsheets
and presentations used in MS OFFICE (Excel and PowerPoint)
these can be found at Office Downloads.
