How does someone keep up to date with Microsoft Update when
they only have a 56k modem connection ?

Any suggestions for how to cope ?

For the most part you should only have to check once a month unless they
find critical issues.

AL, good thing you have a sense of humor. You can go in
and reconfigure the autodownload to take MS updates. But,
beware for some reasons these won't work on all units for
a wide variety of reasons. Select each download
individually and set restore point before allowing to
load. Now watch the performance. If it significantly
degrades go back and do restore. Write down this number
as MS will want to install it again.
GOOD LUCK

The problem is that the two people I know that have dialup
are completely non-technical and are not disposed to handhold
updates as you describe.

I've never had anything but a dial-up connection. If you have a new
computer, then just download a few critical updates at a time,
starting with those that seem particularly pertinent to your
situation.

You might want to take a look at Big Fix, which scans your system and
brings up a list of recommended Microsoft updates (with links to MS
for additional information on each). The primary advantage is that you
only download one at a time that you pick from a list, and you don't
have to subtract ten possibles in order to select a specific one.

What's "Big Fix" ?

Is there a way to download lots of MS Updates (which I think are
packaged as .exe files) so I can burn a CDrom.

I'd like to apply patches to a system while it's not connected to
any network.
