XP and microphones

I can not get my microphone to register. I have updated my driver (SiS) but
when opening the speech icon from the control panel, I get 'the requested
task cannot be carried out because the necessary engine could not be created.
Select a different engine and /or audio device'. I want the microphone to
talk to my heart rate monitor (polar)

Aha! :-)

"Speech" here means "have the computer talk", and the Control Panel item
lets you select a voice and its speed. (Sounds robot-like, but it must be a
boon if you have a sight impediment.)
It requires (guess what!) a Speech engine and languages, see

I assume that this "heart rate monitor" is a piece of software. If it lets
you select an input, select your microphone input. If it doesn't, it relies
on the default input of Windows. That is managed by Control Panel | Sounds
and Audio Devices, but you can access some features by double-clicking the
Volume icon on the taskbar (if you chose to have it there and it didn't
disappear mysteriously).
Note that this Mixer defaults to Playback mode with Mute check boxes, and
that you'd want to show in Record mode (through Options) which has Select
check boxes.
 
thanks, I tried that but still no success. I was wondering if I should trial
an alternative audio driver, but I would not know which one to pick

Nor can we, who don't know more than you tell us...

If your driver matches your audio hardware (SiS) and your operating system
(XP), then it should be the right one.

As you're using this heart rate monitor, wouldn't someone from your medical
environment be able and willing to help you out?
