While upgrading my KAV from version 7 to version 8 none of the required
actions would execute. Uninstall of old version failed, the K web site tried
to help for days on end. they sugest my Windows OS is corrupted. I think they
are right.
Can I just reinstall XP with my CD? Are there preliminary actions needed?
What do i do?

Reinstalling your operating system won't help you to install or
uninstall software.

If you have a retail install CD:

"How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

If you have an OEM install CD or a recovery CD:

Contact the computer manufacturer.

Thanks Leonard:
I realize this is not a direct fix for the Kav upgrade problem. The
suggestion was that because all of the other fixes for my original issue
which was a failed upgrade that left me stuck without full access to the old
version and none to the new, the OS was corrupted.
All I need to know is: can I just reinstall Win XP with my CD (which came
with my new Dell Laptop) for any reason without any prelim's or is there
anything I need to know first? I'm asking here just to take some preasure off
the people resourses at the Kav site with an XP question.

you don't have to do this, you can uninstall kav with a small software
who's name is perfect uninstaller,
download address: http://5.zjnb3.crsky.com/200811/PerfectUninstaller_v6.26.rar

Yes.

Backup to external media any data files you want to keep, so you can restore
them after reinstalling Windows.

thanks Ken
I will try the Kav removal tool offer abouve first. If I can avoid all the

You're welcome, and by all means try alternatives first. In my view,
formatting and reinstalling should almost always be thought of as a last
resort.
