I have several machines with XP Home Addition on a LAN.
The Internet access is via DSL. The machines work well on
the network but the Internet explorer will not access most
web sites, it will access some. Take anyone machine off
the network and connect to an ISP via the internal modem
and bingo Internet explorer connects to any web site. Is
there a default setting in the home addition that needs to
be changed? Anyone have a clue?

There are many ways to acomplish the task of sharing internet access, so in the fist instance we have to know what method you are using. If the case is using a router or a switch you can assing the router´s or switch´s IP address to the following parameters in the network parameters->TCP/IP Protocol :

- Default Gateway
- Preferred DNS

I resolve the same case using this solution... good look
