Hi. I have xp pro at home and sometimes check my hotmail via the web at home. I did this yesterday and now when I log off, it says I have one unread email. How did it do that? How do I stop this from happening? Is microsoft spying on me?

Are you using Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger? Do you have Outlook or
Outlook Express configured to access your Hotmail email?

Kind Regards,

You can get tweakui and use it to disable it.

msn messenger came with xp. It gets activated when I log into msn on the
web. when I finish with hotmail, I log out and shutdown the web page. If
the msn messenger is still located in the task bar, I right click and close
it. Does this have something to do with my o/s?

Hi reberhart,

To get rid of the messages about unread emails go to this registry
key, using regedit.exe:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

You'll see a value called "MessageCount" which has the value you see
in the screen, set it to zero.

As always, before modifying the registry, make a back-up copy.

Good luck, hope this helps.
