XP and Home Network Problem

Dan

I've got a problem with a home network perhaps someone can
help me with.

Setup: DSL modem to a Linksys 4-port router, Computers A
& B hardwired to the router. Linksys WAP-11 also run to
the router, with Computers C and D connecting wirelessly.

Computers A and C running Windows XP-Pro. Computers B and
D running Windows 98SE.

All computers connecting to the internet just fine.
Sharing set up on all computers. Computers B, C, and D
can see each other and share files ok. But Computer A
can't see anything on the network, and while B/C/D can see
A in the workgroup, they can't connect or share with it.

When I doubleclick the workgroup from Computer A, I get
the message "Workgroup is not accessable. You might not
have permission to use this network resource. Contact
your administrator..."

This is driving me crazy. I used the XP pro CD to set up
sharing on the 98SE machines and except for Computer A
everything is working. I've run the network setup and
network identification wizards half a dozen times on A but
it still refuses to see anybody else in the workgroup (and
all computers have the correct workgroup name). Yet A
talks to the internet just fine. I've been thru all the
troubleshooters at practicallynetworking. And the posts
I've seen here seem to deal with the converse of my
problem, not being able to connect to other computers seen
in the workgroup.

Is there some simple step I haven't taken?

Thanks,

Dan

I have the same problem. Computers A & B are Windows XP
Home. Computers C, D & E are using Windows ME. All the
computers can access the internet throught an edgeless
network. The computers, except A, can see all the other
computers on the network. Computer A can not see the
other compuers or printers on the network. I have tried
all the troubleshooters for this to no appeal. Please
send help.

After much wailing and knashing of teeth I solved the
problem, though I don't much like the answer. I had
already turned on NETBIOS over TCPIP and deactivated ICF,
with no success. Then it occurred to me I was still
running Norton Personal Firewall. Disabled that and
rebooted and now everything works fine.

Sure liked having a firewall running in addition to the
NAT in the router, are we to really believe XP Pro cannot
be networked with a software firewall?

Yes, XP Pro can be networked with a software firewall. Configure the
firewall to allow access by computers on the local area network's IP
subnet while blocking access by others. I'm sorry, but I don't know
the exact settings in NPF.
