XP and basic performance

Hi. Have problems with moving open boxes around with the
mouse (lagging!) Have a very capable laptop, so shouldn't
have any performance issues. XP Pro with all updates and
drivers installed. When removing the
process "explorer.exe", everything is smooth. But then...
(you know)...

Any suggestions?
 
Are you using one of those fancy-shmancy fingertip-trace pads that move the
mouse around as you slide your finger around on the pad? Or are you using
when of those schmaltzy
J-Mouse thingamabobs? Or, are you using an attached mouse with a tail that
plugs into the laptop?
