XP and 98 won't network

I recently got a new computer with Windows XP on it and
have connected it to two other computers that run Windows
98se. The hardware connection is fine and the Windows XP
computer can axxess everything on the other two computers
but those computers don't see the XP computer on the
network. In fact, the 98 "Network Neighborhood" shows
nothing even though those two communicate with each other
over the network. I have used the XP trouble shooter and
everything is in order. How do I get 98 to see XP?

Windows XP stopped supporting the NetBEUI protocol, which
is why you can't see the XP machine from Windows 98.

Hi,

You need to create a user account on your W98 machines
with the same username as on the XP machine.
That will solve the issue....

That might be the problem, but I doubt it: if the W9x PCs used
only NetBEUI and the XP PC did not use NetBEUI, then there would
not be communication in either direction.

A more likely cause of this problem (according to my remote
crystal ball) is that the XP PC is using ICF, or maybe some
other firewall software. If ICF is the culprit, turn it off
forever, since ICF will inhibit F&P sharing on your LAN. It
is a good idea, while chasing network problems, to remove all
firewall and AntiVirus software; when your LAN works, you can
reinstall them (one at a time).

If firewall/AV apps aren't the problem, then make sure all PCs
are in the same IP subnet: for IPA=a.b.c.d, all PCs typically
have the same a.b.c, and the d's must be unique.

And, since there are lebenty-leben ways to screw up a network,
if the things I listed above don't cure your net, ask again.

It was the firewall in the antivirus software that came
with the computer. Thanks for the tip.

That will solve some XP networking issues, but I don't think that it
applies here. Different user accounts won't make a computer
completely invisible on the network.

Matching user accounts are necessary when the computer being accessed
runs XP Professional (not XP Home Edition) and Simple File Sharing is
disabled. When that's the case, the XP Professional computer and its
shares are visible on the network, but attempts to access them get
either an "access denied" error message or a prompt for a network
password.

Hello Steve,

I just read this posting and I am at the point you describe below:

"Matching user accounts are necessary when the computer being accessed

disabled. When that's the case, the XP Professional computer and its
shares are visible on the network, but attempts to access them get
either an "access denied" error message or a prompt for a network
password."

I get the exact response you describe. Can you work around this and have a
WinXP Pro PC share folders with Win98 PCs on a peer-to-peer network?

I recently read in a book by Curt Simmons that: "If you have set up a
peer-to-peer computer network between a Windows XP PC and a PC runniing an
earlier version of Windows, the older version of Windows will be able to
access files on the NTFS portion of the Windows XP PC's hard drive over the
network because of the operating system's network redirector software."

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Richard

I wanted to add that other than sharing folders on the XP machine that
everything is working fine. The XP machine sees both shares on the 98
machines, three network printers are accessible by all three computers. The
win98 PCs share the internet using ICS through the XP machine as host.

I all need to do is enable the two Win98 PCs to access shares on the WinXP
PC. I have not set any restrictions for the win98 PCs or any restrictions on
the XP PC yet. (e.g. user and group policies).

Thanks.

I think I found the answer in another posting:

File sharing between XP and 98 uses NetBIOS name resolution, not DNS.
Make sure that NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT) is enabled on both
computers, as shown here:

Thanks

I tried the solution suggsted below and it does not solve the problem. So I
still need help if anyone has a suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestions Steve. I had configured all three of those items
as suggested. I have the firewall enabled on the internet connection only. I
am only using TCP/IP. I have tried enabling NetBios over TCP/IP on all
computers.

The XP drive has two partitions, both NTFS. The D: partition contains three
shares with particular users permitted to access them. I have disabled
"simple file sharing" to define which users have access to each share. Both
win98 PCs see the winXP PC, but are not permitted to access the PC from
their Network Neighborhood. With one win98 PC I get an "access denied" error
message, the other a prompt for a network password.

Both users have matching accounts on the win98 and XP machines with the same
passwords.

Any other suggestions?

Thank you.

Un-share and then re-share the folders on the D: partition, which will
delete and then re-create the permissions associated with them. Make
sure that the Everyone group has access. See this web page for full
details of share permissions:

I have done this in the past with XP Home and win98SE. Can't remember
too many details but i know eveything in 98SE's net configuration has
to be right.

Here's a tutorial that demonstrates basically how to set up from both
the XP and 98SE ends:

http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net.asp

Failing this, try the wizard on My Network Places/Properties. When you
highlight Local Area Connection, an additional set of options become
available in the left column. Select 'Setup a Home or Small Office
Network'. It seems to me I had to go through the wizard twice: once
for Xp and once for 98SE. Somewhere along the line it made a floppy
for me that I used on the 98SE computer. After rebooting both
computers, everything worked fine. Don't quote me on that, there's a
lot of fog in there.

I had the network running with a crossover cable. I had to keep
disconnecting it to set up my DSL modem. Every once in a while, while
switching back and forth, the network would fail and I'd have to play
with it. Once, I unloaded the drivers for both NICs, removed the NICs
and rebooted. Then I re-installed the NICs. That seemed to work.

It seems when you get the 'access denied', it's not about the network
being setup wrong. It's about some kind of race condition. I found by
waiting 10 or 15 minutes, the netwrok would suddenly start working. Go
figure.
