i have a querie regarding a laptop i have which has
windows 2000 on at home and is runnig out of space. I
would like to copy it`s contents onto a new p.c with a
much larger harddrive. The p.c has windows xp and i was
advised to get a crossover cable and setup network wizard
on the p.c then either browse to the p.c from the laptop
and copy everything across or map to it i have tryed this
with no success, is there any step by step documents on
how to do this? as have looked in microsoft office
support but nothing
comes close to what i`m looking for
Any answers i would be very grateful

Do you just want the documents off the
2000 hdd copied across to the XP hdd Wayne?

You can do that, BUT I doubt if you want
to copy the entire contents of the 2000 hdd
to the XP hdd (programs and all) that it'll
work. As there would have to be a record
of the programs you've installed on the 2000
PC in the registry (on the XP PC), in order
for them to work properly.

Copying straight to another PC
wouldn't do this. It would just copy folders
etc, not the registry info. Once copied, the
2000 programs wouldnt know where to
look for the programs.

The only way this would work (I think is
if you dual - boot) on the XP PC.

BUT, in order to do this, I think you have
to partition the XP hdd, reformat then install
2000 on one partition, and XP on the other.

2000 ( I think), has to be installed first, then XP for
dual-boot. (I maybe wrong). But that's what I've
read.. Then when you boot, you'll have
a menu with the option of either using
2000, or XP. You select whatever, then it'll
run Win2000, or Win XP.

Dont use the Network Wizard it's hopeless.

And can make things worse, or not work at all!

In order to network, yup, you need the
cable, and the crossover cable. You also
have to install Printer/file sharing on both XP
and 2000.. I take it the laptop has a network card
in it? and the XP one? On the XP 1, click on
the LAN icon, on the taskbar/properties/TCP/IP
Properties. Under the General Tab, select Use the
following IP. type 192.168.0.1 to the right of this.

Type 255.255.255.0 in for the subnet mask.

(This is if XP is the main PC). On the 2000 PC
do the same, BUT where you put 192.168.0.1
on the XP PC, type in 192.168.0.2. Same for
subnet, and if you want to use the 2000 PC
on the network, also type in 192.168.0.1 in the
default gateway tab, and preferred DNS server
in the LAN icon/Properties/TCP/IP/General tab.

Also, in order to network. The workgroup name
for BOTH MUST be the same so they'll
see each other on the network.

Thats it!
