I've 2 PCs each with XP SP2 and Adobe Reader 8.1.1. On one PC (#1) if I
click a link that requires Adobe to read it, a window opens with Adobe and
the document. Won't do that in other PC (#2), I have to open Adobe Reader
1st then click link. Prior to Adobe Reader 8 upgrade on #2 PC, it would
open links like it does in the #1 PC.
Any suggestions?

In IE click on "tools">"manage add-ons" is the Adobe BHO enabled? if not
highlite it then select enable.
Good luck.

Don't see Adobe BHO, only "Enable or Disable Add-ons" (Nothing happens when
I click it) & "Find More Add-Ons".

If you don't have the BHO that explains why it doesn't work, it's required
to open,reinstall Adobe Reader 8.1.1.

Mike, First what is a BHO (the #1 PC doesn't have the BHO either but it
works right)? Second, do I need to uninstall 8.1.1 before reinstalling it?

You don't have to do either.
Open Adobe Reader and go to "EDIT" and choose "Preferences"
Go down to "Internet" and uncheck the box "display pdf in browser".

Now any pdf file found in a web site will open an independent Adobe window.

Richard, I unchecked that box and tried to open a pdf on a web site and I
get a Window that says:
There is a problem with Adobe Acrobat/Reader. Please close and retry it
again.

I tried a few pdf links on different sites & got same error Window. I used
the same 8.1.1 download on both PCs.
FYI, I checked #1 PC & that box is checked and it opens any of the pdfs that
I tried on #2 PC.

BHO -- Browser Helper Object???

You should now un-install the Adobe Reader and Reboot. Then, download
and re-install the "latest" Reader veersion. Reader is still free and
you should try to remove / re-install it to fix this.

That did it but 1st had to uninstall 8.1.1, restart then reinstall, uncheck
the box you referenced, rebooted PC and it then worked.

Just an update, FYI, as I noted in earlier post that #1 PC had the box under
Preferences>Internet>Display PDF in Browser--box checked, and it was working
right so I checked that box in #2 PC and it's working fine to, so main thing
may be the proper uninstall of 8.1.1, restart PC, reinstall 8.1.1, then
restart and it will work with or without that box checked. So like you may
be, I'm puzzled but as long as it's working is main thing.
Thanks to all that posted with your recommendations. Still some what
puzzled why I'm not seeing that BHO that several of you posted with IE 6
Open, Click Tools, but not BHOs at all.
