I have same problem. My XP Pro computers can access one
another's shared files. No user/password required. But
when I try to access Windows 2000 Server or another Win
2000 Pro computer, I am asked for a user name and password.
But have no idea what to use here. How do I get around
this? All I want is same access for all computers on
network. Thanks.

Simplistically, probably you have no security on your XP boxes setup,
whereas on the Windows 2000 machine there is security setup. Read about
system administration in the "help" articles entitled "System
Administration". Learn about how to set and manage permissions. Since
you have a Windows 2000 Server, you might well have a domain setup. If
someone else set all this up for you, consult with them also.

No Domain. Just a workgroup. Simple setup. But I cannot
access file server or other Win 2000 boxes without being
asked for a user name and password. How do I eliminate
this? I'm trying to look at setting up security on the XP
box. There must be a simple solution for this small
network I'm using at office. Thanks.

You are accessing the shares on the XP boxes
using the Guest account ( bypassing all security. )
This is XPs default security setting in a workgroup.
( It's called 'simple file sharing'. )

To access the shares on the other 2000 boxes, you must
supply a username and password which exists on the 2000
machine you are connecting to.

XP will cache these credentials, and you
shouldn't be asked for them again.

THAT WAS IT. Thanks very much Ron for the solution. This
really helps me get everything up and connected without
too much more complication.
