Ran network wizard on both 98se & XP system. 98 box can
see & access XP box. XP box cannot see 98. Can ping both
directions using IP's; however cannot ping using computer
name. TCP/IP set to assign IP address automatically on
both systems. Disabled internet connection firewall (ICF)
on adapter.

I've gone through the network troubleshooter(XP),
knowledge base article 308007 with no luck. Any guidance
will be greatly appreciated...waisted WAY too much time
with this one. kj

I'm having similar issues, I'm going try "import" an
LMHOSTS file tomorrow. I too have wasted WAY too much
time with this. Judging by the posts here, the night oil
is burning at microsoft working on hotfix.

Ya might wanna read my response to "Gerry Hurley" on
12/17, as I have the same config and it's working great
(finally!)

BTW, I don't know that you need all those settings to be
exactly like mine, but it's what is running successfuly on
my net.

Hope that helps.

Sorry, I actually meant to respond to a similar problem,
about 5 or 6 posts "up". But maybe you can glean
something from my settings anyway.

Kirk,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

Wow, Hans - there's a *wealth* of information in that
piece of work!

Might you know of a good link to find help configuring
how to share a dialup internet connection between User
Accounts (on the same PC)?

I've read everything i can find in the KB, and I still can
find no specific information as to why my 2nd user can't
browse the net with IE6 or send/receive mail in OE (yet he
can ping yahoo.com just fine.) The primary user has no
such problems. Both users have admin priviledges.

The following gave me a clue, which came from a site other
than MS, but I can't seem to get it set up correctly:

"There is one last step to configuring your XP user
profiles. You have to allow other users on the computer
access to the Internet. XP has a built in feature that
allows you to share the current Internet connection with
other users on the computer or network."

I had no such problems adding ICS and sharing my broadband
connection among several PCs (even mixing Win98 & XPs) but
this will be a off-site system for 3 infrequent users. By
the way, the PC *is* part of a Win98 - XP network now.

Thanks for any suggestions!

tr,

normally this works immediately. Occasionally there is a problem
with MTU, please see http://www.michna.com/kb/WxMTU.htm. But
this is not likely to cause total interruption as Windows
normally detects max MTU automatically (with some occasional
lapses, see black hole detection etc.).

Do you have two Ethernet adapters in the first PC? If not,
things are a little bit more complicated. I recommend to buy a
WAN router. They are cheap these days.

Thank you, Hans-Georg, but I probably didn't make my issue
clear eanough, since you refer to the "first PC" and to a
(network) router.

I am wanting to disconnect the subject PC from the current
network, and use it as a stand-alone PC with dialup
internet for 3 users, utilizing its WinXP OS to add 2
additional users, both of which will have Admin
capabilities.

My problem is that although the PC works fine within the
broadband (cable modem) network, as well when the primary
user (user #1) connects to the 'Net via dialup - but when
I add an additional user (thru Control Panel > Users) user
2 cannot browse the 'Net or send/receive mail. Please
note that user 2 *can* successfully ping yahoo.com, etc.
This happens whether I switch users while maintaining the
same dialup connection or whether i use user 2's dialup
configuration. Yet, while maintaining user 2's "live"
connection and switching back to the primary user, user 1
can browse the 'Net just fine.

I'm *really* baffled!

Thanks again,
tr

tr,

please have a look at
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxIcsWithoutLogon.htm. The article
deals with a related problem but also contains a chapter on
making dial-up connections available to multiple users.

At first I didn't get it that you were talking about multiple
users on one computer. (I kind of believe in the rule that there
should be at least one computer for every person. :-)
