I have 2 puters, networked, hub, cable modem. All was
working well. I installed XP on one machine. Curently,
both machines can access the internet. I can ping each
machine, thus demonstarting that my hardware is working
properly. I've been throgh the wizzards MANY times.
Used every available option, several differnt names. Yes,
i ran the XP wizzard on the 98 machine, domain names
match, permissions granted, firewalls dissabled, etc.....
The trouble shooting wizzard is worthless, as I'm shure
you all know. Neither machine believes the other
exsists.

Hi Mike - I had exactly the same problem, but connecting direct via a
crossover cable (see my post on the 26th). I never got over it. And I tried
EVERYTHING. I'm convinced it's a genuine issue rather than just some obscure
setting that needs tweaking - went through all the websites, newsgroups,
support etc.

So I'm afraid this doesn't help much, aside from my gut feeling is upgrade
the other machine. Which is a pain, I know. In the end I cracked, and
installed an upgrade to 2000 on the '98 machine and it worked straight away.
Like, as soon as I switched it on. Which was great. But also doubly
frustrating, in a way.

Good luck.

These tips should help:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

I too had this problem and asked for help here. Have a look at the thread
'98SE & XP Home' which is the advice I was given. I tried everything
suggested and it's now working fine.
