Hey,

XP Pro SP1 has suddenly started taking a long time to boot up and connect to
the network.

Once my Desktop appears, there is a 2 minute delay before my network icon
pops up in the system tray, then the system continues loading normally.

I've been trying to find a solution to this problem for a while, but with no
luck.

Someone suggested a fix was to manually enter my IP/Subnet/Gateway manually,
but that also didn't cure the problem.

I've got WinXP Pro SP1, and a DSL connection running through a hub, with
this system sharing an Internet connection.

So, has anyone got an official explanation for why this happens, and how to
fix it?

Delays of exactly two minutes at boot are usually service startup deadlocks.
These can be pretty hard to track down though.

Does the event log have anything interesting to say?

I just checked, and the following two errors were listed around the last
time I booted.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10005
Date: 11/13/2003
Time: 1:53:10 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: MERCURY
Description:
DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled
or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to
start the service upnphost with arguments "" in order to run the server:
{204810B9-73B2-11D4-BF42-00B0D0118B56}

** And then a few seconds later, this error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7022
Date: 11/13/2003
Time: 2:53:15 AM
User: N/A
Computer: MERCURY
Description:
The Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
service hung on starting.

Any ideas?

I finally gave up and did an overlap install of WinXP.
That cured it, but of course I had to download all of the security updates
again, etc.
