A new version of xoblite, BB2, was brought out last month with a host
of improvements. I've been trying it for a week or two. It's
lightweight, stable, very configurable and easy to use.

| but what does it do ?

Alastair ....

The website http://xoblite.net says ....

xoblite is an advanced Blackbox for Windows branch
with integrated SystemBar and Slit

Appears to be a version of the Blackbox Window/Desktop Manager
that runs under Windows ....

I have no experience with Blackbox itself,
but have used Fluxbox some under Linux ....

Fluxbox is a Blackbox descendent and a very nice
light-weight Window Manager ....

Well, now...that makes it clear as mud. I read the same thing at the
website and still had no idea what it did.

Sorry. I should have made it clear what it did. It's a Windows shell
replacement, like LiteStep or GeoShell.

It does two things that in my opinion are worth doing:

(1) Particularly if you're running XP, it allows you to replace the
standard interface with something less offensive to the eye.

(2) Because any of these shells is very configurable, it allows you
set up your machine to reflect the way you actually work, rather than
stick with Microsoft's - or anyone else's - idea of how you *should*
work. Roll your own interface.

Yep...that one worked for me...thx.

I am using it.

My only problem is that sometimes menus are *EXTREMELY SLOW* (takes
about 5 seconds for a simple menu) to appear.

I two problems with it: It constantly uses 5-10% CPU. The other problem is
that the systray is not working right after waking my laptop up from
standby. Other than that it's great and has made using Windows bearable..

I see a constant 4% CPU usage with either bblean or xoblite, whereas
it's zero at rest with LiteStep. I also note that different CPU
meters report slightly differently; even two slightly different
versions of rainmeter running side by side are marginally different:-)

Makes you wonder...

I've tried setting up the systray stand-alone and in the slit. Both
seem fine.

I can't replicate Chaos Master®'s problem with the slow menus, which
sounds intensely irritating. I haven't seen it reported on the forums
either, but unless I'm missing something, the xoblite team don't seem
very open about bug reporting.

Perhaps the delay is an OS thing.

On my system even Windows Explorer is mostly at 0 CPU when idle.
