I had this same problem when using Xnews years ago, never got a good answer.
I did not have good luck on the newsreaders ng.

I posted to ACF on an Xnews question yesterday. Today, I can see the replies
but my OP is gone.

Could someone please advise on this.

Special/Setup Xnews/Storage tab ..... how many days do you have set for
purge ? 0 (zero) will retain until your news server drops the posts.

Did you read your own post, or use F8 to catch up the group? That will
cause you not to see your own post. It's still there, only Xnews has
marked it as "read."

Click on the thread and go to Article>Refresh Thread to get the whole
thread back again.

If you are filtering out messages aready seen or already downloaded then
try Filter > Remove All Filters.

Try Article > reconstruct Thread (CTRL-U). This usually works although
you will need one posting from the thread to issue that command on.

Special/Setup Xnews/Storage tab ..... how many days do you have set for

In that Storage screen I see 4 choices:
use default- no automatic setting
save nothing- turn off storage
save headers
save headers and articles

Not what you are describing????

Thanks, yes, that works, but still need to look at Doc's suggestion. I hope
to get the display to look normal by itself.

I think you can mark the thread as "keep" and it will stay, but I've never
used that feature of Xnews.

survived an F8.

Sounds good, but where do you find "keep"? - I looked.
Hello, Mike

This is what works for me;

Storage;

Left click on the icon next to the "T" at the bottom.

Choose "store headers and articles"

This keeps everything. Xnews can be configured to store nothing, as a
strictly "on-line" reader, which makes almost no demands on your
HDD storage. The option I use makes demands on your hard disc, so you set
an expiration date as Doc suggested, or occasionally purge the storage
yourself, but in these days of gigabyte drives it's not so essential.

When you leave a group, if you've skipped posts (don't we all?) press

shiftF8 - this will mark all posts as read.

Then press F8 to catchup (TBH I don't quite know what that means, but it
works for me.

Then in Special>Setup>Misc check

"0pen next group after catchup",

and after you leave a group via shftF8 and F8, the next group will open for
yo immediately.

I find this a very fast and easy way to work.

Mike Sa

If you have "Save headers" or "Save headers and articles" selected then you
have a further option of how long to save headers/articles before they are
purged.

While viewing the post that you want kept, press ctrl+[
Or alternatly if you are a mouser right click the small page icon to keep
that post. If you want to mark a whole thread as kept, right click the
small folder icon beside the thread suject name.
For additional keyboard shortcuts press alt+k
Stick with it. :)

Can simply right-click the icon of a post.

The blue outer on the icon indicates the post is being kept.

Thanks to all, have to edit the recent advice to get some decent viewing.
