If you just highlight the part of the post that you wish to reply to and
click on the "Post Follow-Up To Newsgroup" button; Xnews will bring up the
reply window with just the highlighted bit quoted, all correctly attributed
and with the cursor at the bottom ready for you to start typing.

Easy life replying and people will find it difficult to criticise your
posting style.

This works in almost all newsreaders.

Thankee for the heads up. I'm relatively new to newsreaders in general,
but was delighted when I discovered this feature (by accident) and thought
I'd pass it on. One day, I aspire to reading the help files

I have only ever seen it work in Xnews, I dont use dialog, but I
dont believe Agent does and none of the *Nix ones I use do it.

The GNKSA doesn't specify how a newsreader should allow the user to
indicate which part(s) of a post to quote in a reply, but it does
have item

10e) Provides a means of indicating which part(s) to followup to

I'd guess that highlighting was the way they would most (all?) do
it, but maybe there is some other way used by some of these, which
get marked 'yes' for item 10e.

PAN 0.9.3
tin pre-1.4 release 980514

I am surprised at how few.

MS OSs
NewsHound 0.66.7
Xnews 2.05.10
AllNews 1.30
Gravity 2.10b3 (build 955)
Turnpike 6.01
Forté Agent 1.8/32.548

(An evaluated old version of FreeAgent did not have the feature, and
I don't know if the current FreeAgent does nor not.)

I always thought it was a b***** nuisance, if I accidentally dragged the
cursor in the post it messed up the follow - up window.

Just as well I didn't complain about it!

Yet another nice Xnews feature

I speck you know if you press shift F8 follewed by F8 it marks all as read
and opens up the next ng?

Happens a lot to me when I accidentally drag/select a space(end of line
char?)..

That's the only thing I have against XNews.. In Free Agent, I can't even
discern how messages are threaded and who replied to who.

I'm confused about how this happens to you two. Why do you click-drag
the mouse in the view window, if not to select the text you want
included in a reply?

Yes, good advice. Agent (Free Agent ?) and Dialog have the same
capability.

Habitual tick?

Agent does do it. I just did it with yours...that would include Free
Agent, of course.

Might actually be some kind of minor disability.
Something like that, usually slipping off a tool- or scrollbar.

You too may get old (if you can refrain from remarks like those)

In Free Agent, I can't even
discern how messages are threaded

Did you sort the messages by "thread" ?
and who replied to who.

Did you go to Options - Display preferences - Browsers tab and tick
"Show authors's full email address" and/or made sure that Options -
Posting Preferences - Introductions is correctly filled in ?

Indentation in Free Agent is "standard" AFAIK. One ">" is the previous
poster. Two ">" is the one before that. Three ">" is the person prior
etc.

Regards, John.

free agent does this too:

What I'm talking about is shown very easily in the following pic:

In Free Agent, I just see a bunch of ugly icons... but then I guess it's
just my preference..

Well, I don't know which newsreader that is supposed to be but the
following is my Agent. Which is mostly the same as Free Agent :

Pretty clear to me who replied to who etc.
