xnews questions - user icons ?

i notice that when i read some posts in xnews there is an icon next to in
the toolbar; for example, badgolferman's icon shows up as a tee with a golf
club, what causes this and how can i set my own icon ?

It is called an "XFace"

I have not been used as subject matter in a post before; I think I'll
take that as a compliment...

As has been said, it is an x-face. You can create your own by saving a
small image in grayscale with Irfanview or similar graphics program.
Depending upon your newsreader, the format type may have to be .jpg,
..bmp, .gif, etc. Then edit your identity to include the x-face.

I didn't want to say anything earlier but it wasn't that easy for you
to describe after all. It is a green with a flag on it, not a tee with
a golf club. Anyway, what is your x-face going to be?

You're supposed to work it out, then put him down by describing it all
wrong ;o)

But ... if you're a badgolferman how do you know what a green looks
