XML question

Hi,
I'm a C# programmer. Recently, I notice that the phrase Extensible Markup
Language or XML appears on newspaper more and more frequently.
I have some file with extension is .xml. When opening them in Visual Studio
..NET, i noticed that these are text file which contains a lot of tag (placed
in a hirerachical order) like HTML files. Can anyone tell me the context of
which XML is made use ?
If i learn XML, what I can do ?

Further, is there any relation between XSLT and XML ?
