When I try to send an email with an XML file attachment, the program
(windows live mail) hangs and nothing gets to the outbox. I have to send it
with a computer running XP.

So, what's your question?

If you're looking for a workaround, zip the file before attaching it.

Ok. That is nice to know. When I park the car in the garage, I need to turn the car off so
the garage doesn't fill up with carbon monoxide.

Sorry, I thought the question was obvious. The question is "is there some
reason XML files can't be attached to emails - is it a known situation?". In
the meantime, thanks for your suggested workaround - I'll give it a try.

You don't "park the car".
You ask the bus driver "let me out here".

Is that all you can come up with? No wonder why Linux is too hard for you.

Just for fun I tried to send myself an e-mail with an XML file
attached. It attached easily, and when I got the e-mail I opened it
without incident in XML Notepad - well, one incident: XML Notepad asked
me if I would allow script executions (I declined).

My e-mail program is Thunderbird, which I used to send and to receive
the e-mail - so the test is incomplete.
