I currently have Windows Media player 7.1, RealAudio 8.0 & Infranview.
However i can not play certain music files. Examples of two music files
with these extensions are " .xm or .mod ".

Please advise what pluggins & programs i need to add so i can easily
listen to the above types, better yet, all music file types.

i use a old 450 hrtz CPU Nec PC, running Win-98SE OS.

Winamp is capable to play them.

This is a kind of files, that contain sample bits, which are treated, as
if the samples were MIDI notes. If done well, you could create pieces of
music of more than half an hour, while the file itself was less than 1
MB in size. The system was first developed on the AMIGA, then refined on
the PC, until the "Music Maker" stuff and MPG files made them obsolete.

These "Mod files" can be played by various media players, if you find
the required Midas plug in, or by the normal/special versions of foobar
2000 (which can deal even with one of my files, that made xmplay and
YAMP only repeat the same first loop, until the end of the "song". Yet
both are very good overall music players, too; their range goes beyond
mere mod playing, which they only started out at).

Oops, there is a *second* YAMP program, with exactly the same spelling,
but wav processing there. Take care that you won't download the wrong
one, it is shareware btw.

I have quite a nice little MOD collection, and play them once in a while. I
always enjoy them. Back in the old days, the ones with voice used to amaze
me.

I second this. I actually recommended this player as one of my all time
favorite freeware apps in another thread here. It it also great for
streaming even of Window Media streams wrapped as asf/asx (the only way I
can get BBC World News without having RealPlayer running).
