Anyone have input about problems with subject card on WinXP Pro SP2?

Other than the obvious latest drivers.

Running an ATI Radeon X800XT AIW and it is going just fine. Don't install
any Microsoft updates for graphics cards. I have heard this said before but
I proved it to myself the other day. They just do not work! Anyway, you
should need no other drivers that the manufacturers for graphics cards.
One little trick that may have an influence on your graphics is a loose
molex wire.
The other day a front case LED stopped working. The problem was a wire to
the rear of a PUS molex connector was not connecting fully. I had to hold
the molex connector and push the wires into it from the rear and the wire
slipped into position.
I feared that may have been the problem with a hard drive that recently
clacked and clacked and clacked.
That’s just an idea.
Are having a specific problem or maybe you are looking at buying a 8600GT.
What are the core and memory speeds supposed to be for it?

"Hey, guys i need some help figuring out what the problem is, i had an x300
then switched to an 8600 and now i keep getting random crashes, i repleaced
the gpu with another model tried 3 differnt drivers and it dosnt just happen
in games i could be talking on msn and then it would just go.

The system for all compeunts runs between 30C-45C (the gpu is the hotest) my
voltage is 3.3- 3.22 5 - 4.97 12 - 12.09 5 (standby) 4.9

My system specs are as follows

Intel Core 2 Duo (2.4GHz)
Asus P5B Socket 775 Intel 965 Express
320 GB 7,200RPM Sata Seagate Harddrive
OCZ (OCZ2P8001GK) DDR2 PC2-6400 Platinum 1GB (2x512MB) Dual Channel Kit
XFX 8600GT
LG GSA-H50N 18X Burner

I already ran memtest and occd(for 30min) both are fine. your help is
greatly apricaiated as all i want is a stable system. thank you for your help

This thread was creted for me, this is the orginal msg.

Hi Mathon,

Maybe when you installed the card and drivers for the first time you hadn't
let the operating system configure itself for the software and the card. I
remember the ATI CCC application tests the installation and gives the user a
message and says the screen may go black for a few moments several times
..
Maybe reinstall with Antivirus disabled. Be disconnected fro the internet.
Turn off any Atuo update features that may be running.
Try a clean boot.

I checked the bios i didnt see any settings for the card. Maybe i dont know
where to look but i didnt see anything. Before i installed the card i
downloaded the drivers then uninstalled the old ones and installed the new
ones. I never let the system configure it for me as it usally leads to old
drivers. I dont know where a program like that for Nvidia is, i dont remebr
that ati application, also when i installed i disabled my av, i was connected
to the internet but i dought that was it and auto update is disabled. I dont
wanna reinstall windows as its a pain.

I mean in the bios the setting for the PCI or AGP device and the memory
64/128/256/512/MB.
I don't think Nvidia has a control panel software like the ATI CCC.
I would try reinstalling the the driver.
Perhaps a good trick may be to reset the computer bios to defaults if you
are comfortable with that, not forgetting to reenter the bios to ajust the
appropriate settings after you reinstall the graphics drivers. All that
resetting my do the system some good.
How big is your User folder.
I think that is odd that the installation disabled the Antivirus when it
installed the drivers, unless it asked you to and you disabled it manually.
I don't know if the Nvidia installation setup overwrites old Nvidia drivers
but I think the ATI installation process does overwite them.
Maybe you could uninstall the Nvidia drivers manually and delete the
folder, disable Antivirus manually, disconnect from the internet, disable
any auto update features and reinstall the Nvidia drivers.
Is the system clean, DiskCleanup, Defragmented...create a new USer folder
for yourself to decrease the size of your current User profile.
Is it a brand new card?

Yes i looked in my bios i didnt see ANY settings for the video card. I have
reinstalled the drivers 5 times, using 3 differnt driver versions its not the
drivers (did clean install using DC Pro) I dont see how resetting the bios
could help, and im not sure where in the bios that is either but i think i
saw that there. My user folder is quite big (4GB) but thats because i keep
things on my desktop and stuff in my doc (music) otherwise it would probley
be less then 1GB. Nvidia does overright the drivers but again i uninstalled
using DC Pro and manualy . The installation didnt disable my antivirus, i did
so it could install and rule out another varerable. Auto update is OFF i dont
download any MS updates, unless i really want to but i havnt in the past 3
months. The internet being connected or not wont have any effect... I did i
checked for errors, defraged, antivirus scan, my system is in good health
just this dam BSOD. The card is brand new. Thank you for all your help so
far, I just want a stable computer...

I will not have covered all the possibilities, only what I have experienced.
You may like to try the hardware forum. In the Bios there is a default
setting and the default is always set to PCI. That always has to be changed
to AGP if you use an AGP graphics card.
User folder , I was only thinking junk may be interfering with the
installation. My User folder is 2.9 MB after a reinstall and after I created
a new user profile for myself. I think the folder before then was 20 MB so I
got a bit concerned.
Manually go to Microsoft Downloads and look for the DirectX End User
download. That will download a small, about 280kb file that checks the
DirectX installation on the computer. Then it will tell you if DirectX needs
any new files.
It’s a darn nuscience that I must say, but I have done it so often with
reinstallations I am beginning to remember I should check it each time I
reinstall Windows.
Microsoft Update and the operating system do not check for updated DirectX
files.
That may very well be the problem.
Good luck with it, its great having 16 piplelines.

This thread was created for me, there was a setting for PCI/PGP in the bios.
Its not an AGP card so i dont think i needa change anything. If im going to
make a new user i might as well reinstall windows then, and when i installed
some games i let the programs install DirectX
