I have just installed this card and anyone also using it know what the
unused contact strip is for on the outfacing side.

Handbook (useless) and online reviews say nowt about it.

that's it.......so when fitting a pair in SLI mode, where does the
connector come from as there were no leads in with mine other than the
HD.

It depends entirely on the motherboard. I built a PC with an ABIT AN8
SLI motherboard and it came with a card that sat parallel to the
motherboard between the PCIe slots that determined whether you were
running in normal or SLI mode. It also came with an SLI connector that
fit on the top of the two SLI cards to connect them to the very edge
connector and contact fingers that you see on the top the that 7600GT
video card.

Most newer motherboards do not need to use these SLI connectors as it is
done via the PCIe slot connectors (not 100% sure about that though).

If the connector is needed for your SLI capable motherboard, it *should*
be part of the accessory package that came with the motherboard.
