I am trying to build a new desktop image based on WinXP SP2, and am
following our normal process of copying the entire I386 folder from
the CD's we recieve from our EA agreement to the C:\ drive on the box
I am trying to build the image for. However, the XCOPY keeps failing
on the ASMS folders...I have seen some articles on an issue or two
with the ASMS folders...is this related? I am using the /E switch
with XCOPY, and I did not have this issue with WinXP SP1. This is a
full CD of XP with SP2 already applied from Microsoft, so I have not
created a slipstream, yet. I may try that, if this can not be
resolved.

Thanks.

You'll need an actual Windows XP CD to accomplish your goal.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

Why use Xcopy? Using "copy" and "paste" works just fine in Explorer. Yes,
old habits die hard, but the old habits the are support with DOS are no
longer supported, as DOS has dropped to the way side.

xcopy supports more features then explorer (for example, continue on
error, logging to a file etc...) and if you run xcopy on a 32bit
system that isnt really DOS...

a good alternate tool is robocopy from resource kit...supports to copy
files in "backup" mode...which means it will copy the files even if
you don't have permissions (you need to have tha backup directories
user right of course) as well as resuamble transfers (retries etc...)

Let me try to explain further, I appreciate everyone's replies.

I am in the process of building a full "kill the partitions on the
drive and format" image for our Corporate PC's. I have recieved,
thanks to lots of $$$ paid to Microsoft for an Enterprise Agreement, a
CD labled "Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2".
With WinXP SP1 (and Windows 2000 before that), part of our image
construction process was to copy (via XCOPY) the entire I386 folder to
a blank, formated drive on the PC that needed an image built, to run
the install from THAT I386 folder locally (and correct the pointers
inside the registry) so that our Helpdesk has an easier time if the
client needs to repair/re-install Windows without hunting for a CD.
We normally do this process via a network boot disk, or in a rush, via
boot CD, floppy, or USB key with some basic OS files and drivers.

My problem is that portions of the ASMS folder fail during the XCOPY,
either across the network, or via CD, and I did not have this problem
with WinXP SP1.

I can build a slipstream install of SP2 on a WinXP SP1, and try that,
but I was trying to determine why this would not work with WinXP w/SP2
integrated CD from MS, but does with the WinXP w/SP1 integrated CD.

Thanks.

After posting above more detail, I thought about it, and decided a
response with less detail may work too.

Have a Microsoft supplied CD of WinXP with SP2 already
applied...trying to copy the I386 folder from that CD to a blank drive
on a PC, XCOPY fails in the ASMS folder...WinXP SP1 had no problems,
have not tried a slipstreamed WinXP SP1 with SP2 applied, but trying
to avoid effort if that XCOPY will fail ALSO on the ASMS directory.

I know that the ASMS directory presented some problems some time back,
trying to gather info before resuming to beat my head against the
wall...

Thanks.

Thanks Carey. If I can't sort this out, guess I'll have to give
Sysprep or RIS some more attention. We had steered away from Sysprep
back with Windows 2000, because by the time Sysprep finished grinding
through it's setup process for all our apps on one PC, we were able to
image three other PC's with a Ghost image, change the SID, configure
for the end user, and place on the cart to be delivered.

Follow-up:

Has anyone run into this issue? I have tried three different XP Pro
SP2 CD's, and it still fails during the copy when it hits the ASMS
folder...could this be a path depth issue? I can create a XP SP1 CD
with SP2 slipstreamed in, and the copy works fine, but I would prefer
to use the XP SP2 CD that we pay $$ for from M$.

Thanks.
