Ok, could be here for ever going into details, needless to say this was done on a couple spare slim's that were given to me by my nephew because he had managed to get them banned. No other mods have been done apart from the internal USB modification. No need to worry about copyright infringements
Basically the standard 4GB model has a small memory module inside that is removable. It plugs into a small header on board
I found the 4GB not really big enough nowadays, so did some searching about and found a page where'as a guy had modded his to accept a USB card reader. He simply soldered it on and fitted a 32GB SD card. It worked. Then he took it a little further and tried an external USB drive. Boom, from 32GB to 465GB with a 500GB drive. Now he also said he has had confirmation that a 1TB drive also works.
I took this information and took it a little further by simply fitting an external USB port to the side of the case to allow easy access for either External drive, Pendrive or whatever USB storage device you deem fit. It was very straight forward to do. Involved a little bit of cutting and adjusting, however worked well. The first one I did was trial and as such I didn't measure properly so the grill hole is a little big due to where the USB port is mounted and space around for the plug. The second one I learned from my mistake. There was a little issue with the fan cowling, however a little Dremel sorted that out in no time.
Two different models were used one was a standard 4GB the other was a 120GB model. The 120gb 1439 model would not accept anything larger than 32GB. This apparently is down to firmware issues. It also had different connections and no mini USB header. It was a standard single line header on board with through hole connections (picture included)
Why you may ask? Well now a multitude of games maybe be stored on the HDD for access and saves wear on disc. Yes disc has to be inserted however after a while they stop spinning. In turn this cuts down noise and heat production. And shed loads of space I have more pictures if anyone is interested?
