X850XT fan noise

All,
Just upgraded to the above and man does it whine. Under normal load, plenty
of PS and plenty of cooling. Ive read somewhere that using ATITool can you
adjust the fan speed, to try and get out of the noisy sweet spot.

Once I enable manual, what speed should I set ? The article says run it at
100 all the time.
Any suggestions ?

Yep, get an arctic cooler. Inexpensive and very quiet!

My x8500 (PCI-E version) fires up full speed only on boot up. It quiets down
in 5secs or so and even under stress is very quiet. I would hate to have to
listen to that all the time........ By any chance are you overclocking it
very high? I think at between 60c-70c the fan kicks in at high speed and
stays there. Don't run it at 100% all the time, it isn't needed. It has
exceptional cooling and should not need to run at those speeds all the time,
that would drive me nuts.

Lower the fan's duty cycle in increments of 10% until the noise becomes
tolerable, while monitoring the temp.

The X850 should be very quiet if you leave the settings at default. Mine
never goes to high speed even during intensive gaming and stress like 3dmark
'05. At boot, it is supposed to go to high speed for just a few seconds as a
diagnostic tool to ensure it is working properly. I would look at case
airflow and make sure that the fan is not set for too low a temp as a goal.
I never hear mine. My external HDD fan is much more noisy than the X850.
Mine is the Sapphire model, which may have a few differences, but in
appearence, looks just like the ATI reference board.
