X800 XT Platinum edition problem

Hi, I have a machine with the following specs

1GB Ram
2.8 Celeron
80GB Hdd
19inch HP Flat Panel Monitor
CD-ROM drive
CD-RW Drive
X800 Xt platinum AGP card
an Elite something motherboard
500W power supply

The problem is that i had to put it away for a while to study for
exams. Now when fire the PC up its fine for about 4-6minutes then
white lines appear on the screen and it generally look awful. i've
tried running games and after few minutes the same thing happens. I
have tried a conventional monitor and that doesn't help either. the
comp doesn't crash the display just stuffs up.

I would appreciate some help with this problem?

The fact that it occurs gradually leads me to believe that it's heat
related. Check the GPU fan for any possible obstruction and proper function.
Ditto for case ventilation. On a different note.....ECS m/b, Celeron
processor and an X800XT PE???

Ages ago, gotto be around a decade, I experienced something similar. IIRC
it was a Hercules Dynamite 128 4MB card. A short time after powering on I
got vertical black bars across the screen. In that case it turned out to be
a poor solder on one of the memory chips causing the conductivity between a
single pin on one chip to lose connection with the board once heated.

A few things to try (some already suggested by others):

- - Verify whether it's a hardware problem or not. Reboot and make sure the
distortions are persistent across the entire reboot sequence.
- - Re insert the card to ensure it's properly seated
- - Verify the card's fan and heatsink status
- - Buy a can of compressed air and use it to ensure the card is nice and
dust free.
- - To see if it's the card or something else, test the card in another
computer or try another card in yours.

I don't have an overdrive tab.

I have the latest Catalyst drivers on an x700. Is it only available on the
card mentioned by the original poster?

I am pretty sure that it is the card because i have tried the PC with
the onboard graphics and its completely fine. Heat was one of our
initial thoughts and may be correct.

I will try the compressed air and reseating it.

What is the general opinion on these artic coolers that people can get
off places like Ebay??

I got one from EBuyer and it's pretty good. The trick is to make sure
that you have the right one as I have heard of people getting into
trouble.
