Can I use an X800 XL AGP card with windows 98? I have a dual boot system and
sometimes need to go to win98 for games and such. The ATI website seems to
be saying that win98 support stopped at 9800PRO. Am I reading this right?

Note the original poster has a dual-boot system. Too bad some games made in
the 20th Century don't work well with XP.

Yes it will work:

Windows 98/98SE is supported through the Windows Millennium Edition
driver.

Well, I went and bought one and wow! It almost doubled my framerate from a
9800PRO on XP. The problem is I cannot get it to recogize the X800XL on
Win98 as AGP. Win98 sees it as a PCI and I can't get the ATI software to
install properly.

After reboot, Win98 loads and just as the desktop is supposed to appear I
get a black screen.

I'm using the Win98/ME drivers and when it runs the install it says it's
installing Win98 drivers. Is there a way to force WinME drivers? Am I doing
something wrong?

You got it backwards. The video card is a TOOL. Playing games *of your
choice* is the purpose. What, spending $300 shouldn't allow you go play
enjoyable old-tech games *along with* the new-tech ones? Not too many people
outside of the Mac community can accept this.

And it's not just games. I just discovered Unsafedisc doesn't work with
2000/XP. Had to blow the dust off an old Win98 box just to make a patched
exe.

You may have to install the drivers manually. Use Winrar or Winzip and
extract the latest Win9x/Me Catalyst files (should be v5.2) from the
installer program to a temporary folder.

Go into device manager, right-click on the video card and open up its
properties. In the "driver" tab, there is an "update driver" button. Click
on that and follow through. When asked, click on "have disk" and point to
the folder where you extracted the files.
