Well, they are both fast. You can always look at benchmarks and see a
difference, but the average difference with practical use ain't huge.

ATI is putting some focus in to videoencoding through their
convert-tool in Avivo. Yet this dosn't seem to be GPU-optimized, but
from what I understand they want to accelerated it through the GPU
later on...

Both are very good on movie playback -- the 7800GT thus should have
the PureVideo Decoder for optimal quality. This you have to pay extra
for and download from Nvidia.com.

Similar price. Similar performance. X1800XL, IMO, has more potential for
later games due to the programmable memory controller and AVIVO.

It's a toss up, but I'd go for the X1800XL.

Very similar performance and price - I went for an X1800XL last week
because, in general, I've found ATI cards to use less electrical power:

a. Means that its more likely to be quieter from a cooling point of view -
certainly my Sapphire card has a smaller fan than the NVIDIA equivalent.
Also means less heat dumped into the case - with meant that I can keep the
main intake/exhaust fans at their current slow speed.

b. My PSU is only rated at 300W, and I've added a couple of hard drives
previously so had some concerns about its ability to cope with a power
hungry card.

No problems so far - so I seem to have got away with it. The noise hasn't
increased, and my PSU hasn't complained either.

From the reviews the 7800 Gt spanks the ATI in everything. but not by
huge ammounts.

Iammore interested in the HD encoding aspect of the card. It still
will be alot more powerfull that my 6600 Gt i have now.
