Does that fact that ATI won't have an AGP version of the X1800 XT mean
that none of their partners will either? Or is it possible that a
different brand-name board might have an AGP version?

10 chances to 1...NO!...they are trying to get everyone to update their
systems to the PCI-X...even Nvidia is doing it with their 7800
series..besides it is a crossfire ready card..meaning 2. That means the card
would have to be redisgned totally for AGP.If only I hadn't bought that
X800Xl...

I'm getting a little weak in the knees Smart Feet.

I'm gonna hate myself for doing it...... but.......... I'm getting very,
very tempted to buy an X1800XT 512MB and a new PCI-E mobo :(

And the Athlon 64, of course.

They are calling to you.

Yeah.... but I've already got an A64. Here are my specs:

----------------------------------------------
Windows XP (2600-Professional) w/ SP2
AMD Socket 939 Athlon 64 FX-53, 1MB L2 Cache (2.4ghz@200mhz-FSB)
ASUS "A8V Deluxe Wi-Fi" K8T800 Pro (BIOS: 1014)
VIA Hyperion 4in1 456v
1024mb (2 x (512mb OCZ Platinum EL (2-3-2-5) DDR400/PC3200) Dual Channel)
[OCZ4001024ELDCPE-K]
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (Catalyst 5.8) (C-378mhz / M-337.5mhz) OC to
(C-411.75mhz / M-360.00mhz)
SbAudigy 5.1 (PCI-Slot 3)

*Promise FastTrak 378 (PDC20378) 2+0/RAID 0*
120gb Western Digital WD1200JB (RAID 1of2)
120gb Western Digital WD1200JB (RAID 2of2)

16x HI-VAL DVDRom (BDV316C) secondary/master
Plextor (PX-716SA) VIA SATA-1

LianLi PC-6070 *Silent* Aluminum Mid-Tower Case | 2x80mm intake fans, 1x80mm
exhaust fan, 1x slot cooler
OCZ Modstream 520watt PSU | +3.3V(28A), +5V(52A), +12V(28A)

What's another $150 for a PCIe mobo when you are already paying close to
$600 for a X1800XT? eVGA started bundling SLI mobos with its high-end video
cards; maybe ATi or Sapphire should follow suit. :-)

Heh, I admit the upgrade bug has been biting me a little bit lately as well,
but I'm gonna stick it out until next year. Hopefully AMD will have a new
revision of their dual core processors out by then, and I think we can
probably count on a product refresh of these new video cards. The big
question is when will DirectX 10 be coming out? If it's going to come out
next year (even in the second half of the year), I may hang on to my current
rig until then.

DirectX 10 will launch with Windows Vista.

There was talk about a "bridge" chip to allow PCI-E cards to be easily
converted to AGP (by the manufacturer of course) without having to change
the video card onboard architecture. Not sure where that stands.

Here is the truly practical and economic answer to your dilemma, at
least for 939-pin A64:-

http://www.tbreak.com/reviews/article.php?id=406

In Stock at Newegg -- only $72.25 plus shipping.

Got good reviews elsewhere too, and Anandtech did a very favorable
review of the reference board using the same Uli chip-set a month or
two ago. No performance/functionality loss caused by the dual-AGP/PCIe
architecture.

Many boards have been made with bridge chips, some going one way, some going
the other. A few motherboards have also been made with bridge chips. No
news here.

PCI Express. PCI-X is a different standard. Why the PCI committee and
nvidia are trying so hard to confuse people on this I do not understand.
