I'm not sure if this is old news or not, but I have just found out that
X1 desktop search is now free for personal use:

http://www.x1.com - download link bottom left.

I'm trying it as an alternative to google desktop. So far it seems OK.
It needs some careful setting up. It seemed to want to phone home a
lot, so I have it blocked in my firewall and still seems to run well.

Thanks! X1 seems to have a good reputation.
While there is this "another one bites the dust" category, there is also
this opposite category of ??ware turning freeware (for personal use).

How about calling that the "Born Again" category? :)

but. . .

X1 (was Find) was a Liteware/Shareware app for a while (circa 2003) -
then only $ware (circa 2004) - now Liteware/Shareware again (client vs.
enterprise versions). . .

Perhaps we also need a Merry-go-round category. There are other apps
that have flip-flopped back and forth. . .

I've just installed it: It belongs to the category Yahoo-Toolbarware.

Let me eh, how shall I put it, come back to that some time ;)

I see, thanks for correcting. I had only a vague notion about X1.

The 'Born Again and Again' category? I'm no good at religious stuff ;)

Me either. I know you can be "saved" any number of times but I don't
know if you can be "born again" more than once.

You mean it installs the Y-toolbar by default and you are not offered
the option to opt out, or what?

You're offered to opt out, anyway it should be mentioned.

What should perhaps also be mentioned is that it's a huge download
(13.5 Mb).

It's fairly old news now but it's nice to see someone referring to X1 as
I personally reckon it is an outstanding desktop search.

YMMV but I think X1 is one of the best.
