I have installed the ethernet adapters done the wiring and
installed the switch, can't get the two computers to
recognize each other. the wizards worked fine each
computer is sending packets the lights are flashing on the
switch. still neither computer will recognize the other on
the network. All wiring was checked and double checked it
is wired correctly.
This is supposed to be a snap with x-p, help

These tips should help:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

4. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".

Just a question - "installed the switch". What do you mean by "switch" here?
What is it plugged in to at the back of your computer?

After installing Win XP from scratch on a new hard drive I had no trouble reaching the Internet. I could see the 4 port hub from both of my home computers, dsl worked, and I found I could PING the other computer on my network. But, alas, I couldn't share a printer or see the files on the other computer.

I've been banging my head on my new Win XP installation for three days trying to get print and file sharing to work. After a hundred reboots, three regedit sessions, and lots of waiting while XP refused to find the other computer on my simple network I finally figured out the problem.

Norton Internet Security firewall rules needed to be edited to allow incoming and outgoing traffic between my two computers.

I no longer have any excuse to fiddle with my system settings and reboot every 5 minutes... guess I'll just have to get to work <grin>!
