ever since all the recent worm & virus activity, my
machine continually produces a window with the following
message, "x.exe has encouuntered a problem and must shut
down" Click OK and then get a request to send an error
report. This I do.

Nothing has changed. All my updates are current, all my
antivirus is current. My machine is diagnosed as clean
and functioning correctly.

What is e.exe and why is it having so many problems.

By the way, If I disable Messenger will the popups stop?

THanks a bunch folks.

Mike

Hi, Mike.

As you must know by now, x.exe is not a valid Windows file, and neither is
e.exe. Can you simply delete that file (or those files - or was that just a
typo)? Any idea where that file came from?

Have you run the System File Checker? At the Run prompt, type: sfc
/scannow

SFC will compare each WinXP file against the "known good" copy held in your
on-drive cache and replace any missing or damaged ones. Have your WinXP
CD-ROM handy; SFC probably will want to see that.

Yes, if you disable Messenger, most of the popups will stop. But so will
many of the legitimate messages that you need to see. There are much better
solutions, as you will see if you scan just a few messages here, because
that same question is asked and answered several times a day. For example,
look at the responses to Please Help!, posted by Betty at 7:40 am (CDT)
today, just a couple of hours after your post.

Find the X.EXE process in the Task Manager and end it. Also find X.EXE
in your startup settings and disable it. If this does not cause
problems, delete the X.EXE file from the HDD.
Applications that start with Windows can be found here:
- the WIN.INI, section [windows], entries "run=" and "load="
- the Registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
- the folders
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\{username}\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
