x-axis text wraping

I'm working with data in a column chart that expands over 36 periods.
Rather than have the x-axis list 1 thru 36 I want x-axis to display text.
I already know how to get the text there and to adjust the x-axis
orientation, etc. However, the graph automatically wraps the text once
it gets so long.

I don't want the text to wrap. Is there anyway to have the chart not
wrap the text? Besides decreasing the font of the x-axis.

I'm not sure if this exactly answers your question, but you can try Jon's
staggered axis labels:

There might be something in there that you can adapt to your situation, but
I confess I don't see it just yet...

Hi Brett -

The technique still might help. I've found that data labels can be a
little longer before Excel decides you want them wrapped. Also, using
dummy axis labels as in this example allow you to override Excel's
normal tendency not to use all of the category labels, even if you type
1 in the appropriate box. Try the technique without actually staggering
alternate labels.

I'll give it a try.
