WUWebControl Class damaged

I recently noticed that there were a few damaged files in my
Downloaded Program Files folder when I was looking under
Tools, Internet Options, Settings, View Objects.

The ones that were corrupt were a couple of Symantec files,
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool, Shockwave Flash
Object and WUWebControl Class.

I right-clicked them and successfully managed to update all
except the WUWebControl Class file.

Would anyone know why these should get corrupt? I ran my
Norton Internet Security antivirus and it showed no problems.

Also, I read somewhere that I can correct the problem with
the WUWebControl Class file by deleting it. Is this so? Also,
what does it do? I suspect it is something to do with Windows
Web Update. However, although I have automatic updates
switched off, I can get into the update site although it currently
reports no updates to download so I cannot test if it is working OK.

Thanks for any help. I am using Windows XP Pro with SP2 and
kept up to date. The WUWebControl Class file reports as
version 5.8.0.2429 with an ID of {6414512B-B978-451D-A0D8-FCFDF33E833C}
if that helps. It also mentions a Code Base of
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/V5Controls/en/x86/client/wuweb_site.cab?1140216776359

Cheers

The damaged class is for Windows Update. Likely the damage was caused by
Nortons, although I would not be too concerned; classes being noted as
'damaged' is actually quite common, so unless you are trying to resolve a
specific problem, I wouldn't worry.

You can delete the Windows Update class without fear, the next time you go
to Windows Update a new copy will be offered.

Hi Bigt,
Try this :
Open a RUN Command and type in the Text Box the following:
regsvr32 msxml3.dll Press Ok and you will get Success message Reboot and try
Windwos Updates.
Hope this Helps

Sandi,

Thanks for your help. I ereased it as suggested and it caused no
problem. Went into
Windows Update and was requested to install Wndows Genuine Advantage
Validatio ntool. Which installed successfully. Did notice though that
the WUWebControl Class
did not reappear in my list of Downloaded Program Files.

nass,

I went with Sandi's suggestion but thanks for your reply anyway.
By the way, what does regsvr32 msxml3.dll actually do?
