In Win XP Pro in my C: drive I have a directory called WUTemp. I think it
is an update directory. But I have updated many times and there is nothing
in here? Can I delete it? Will that cause future problems or would it be
"re-created as needed".

Windows Updates will recreate this directory if it doesn't exist. Sometimes
after an update there are files left behind but they aren't needed anymore.
You can delete the WUTemp directory but wait until after you have finished
doing updates and after you have performed a reboot (even if an update
doesn't appear to need one).
