wupdater.exe - windows cannot shutdown by itself...HELP!!!

i even re installed xp and cleaned out everything so this porblem would be solved, after shutting down about 5 times it was fine, but after that it has the same problem.
it keeps on gving me the end program box, and i have to click 'close now' to shut it down, otherwise it'll say 'prgram not responding'
i'm thinking since i got the service pack it may have done something funny, as it deleted some of my hardware drivers for my laptop, so i don't trust it entirely.
if anyone can help, or if there is a patch of file i can download, please email me!!
