Dude

hi all,

i posted it earlier, but seems i need to clear the problem.
When i add WUAU.ADM nothing is added under WindowsUpdate.
I have no problems importing other .ADM . Any ideas?
Thanks

I understand the following as your setup:
You have a W2k DC, SUS Server on which you have updates to offer and a W2k
Client.

SUS Server: You have SUS installed and all updates are deployed.
W2k DC: Domain Controller
On the DC, Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Active
Directory Users And Computers.

2) For the domain or OU, select the appropriate Group Policy.

3) Edit -> Properties.

4) Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates.

5) Right click and select Add new templates from the context menu.

6) Add wuau.adm in %windir%\inf directory. This template file is
installed with AU (as part of W2k SP3 and above).

7) Refresh Administrative Templates, then traverse to Windows
Componenets under Administartive Templates. Should be able to find an item
for 'Windows Update' now.

8) Select 'Windows Update'. In the list view on the right, there is an
option 'Configure Automatic Updates'. This policy wizard is self explanatory
to set the options for AU. Policy set here will apply to this Group. Make
sure you specify the SUS Server URL here so that your clients point here.

9) These policies will then be refreshed on the clients in about 2
hrs(default GP Refresh time) OR force it on W2k Client which is joined to
teh W2k DC domain by running this from command prompt:
secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy

OR If you do not want to use a Domain Controller, these policies could be
manually set in teh Client Machines by adding registry keys. Please let me
know when you are able
to get to this setup and i could help with teh rest.

Thanks Srini.
At last i was able to import WUAU.ADM. I dont know what
was wrong. Now i got other problem. I've enabled "Auto
Updates", set the option to "3 - auto download and noitfy",
scheduled it - "Every Day" @ "01:00". Then i've specified
"intranet update server" and "statistic server" as
http://Srv1. Then i've approved few updates on Srv1. But
at 1.00 am nothing happened on the 2KPro that has this
poicy applied. I got permissions right for this GPO, i've
restarted 2KPro , even i did secedit /refreshpolicy.
BTW - when i open "windows update" from "control panel" on
2KPro, i can choose no option - all 3 are grayed.
Any ideas? Thanks once again.

If the options in the WU on the Client are greyed out then that means they
are controlled by policy.

Do you log in as an admin on the w2kpro machine ?.

yeah.
GPRESULT gives that workstation is getting setting from
Default Domain Ploicy, the OU policy it belongs to, and
local policy. I'have enabled windows update at OU level.
Its not enabled at domain level.

From your description, the policy seems to have applied successfully now.
Please check %systemdir%\Program Files\windowsUpdate directory(hidden
folder), to see if it has and cabs downloaded. It takes some time to
download cabs, then it installs at 1 a.m provided there is an admin logged
in to the machine at 1 a.m. Please check teh event viewer System and
Application logs for any Automatic Updates related event log as well.

This is assuming there are updates available on the SUS Server, else you may
want to check that too.
