WTF Happened to my administrator account ????

On one of my XP machines I created a new user account "test" tyo play with
user profiles. This is the first time I've done this in XP. I've
cretainly done it may times in nt/w2k.

I did not use the "RENAME" buttin. I created an account.

When I logged out, or switched users all I saw was "guest" or "test"
on my machine !!!! Where did Administrator go ?

Prior to this I had the machine set up to autologin into administrator.

When I browse to \documents and settings\administrator all my files
are there.

Any ideas on how to my desktop back ?

I know all my data is there, I'd rather not have to reinstall everything.
I look at this as just an exciting learning experience.

Thanks

Hi,

Once you create a regular user account, WinXP hides the admin account. To
access it, just hit ctrl+alt+delete twice at the welcome screen to access
the Win2000-style logon where you can type it in.

You can still setup the autologon if you wish. Start/run "control
userpasswords2" (without the quotes).

Uncheck the box requiring a username and password, click apply/ok and follow
the prompts to set up a default logon.

A big THANK YOU late on a Sunday evening, here in New York City. I
have no clue where on the planet you are, but if you're in Europe
you're up much too late. :-) This is what makes Usenet great.
I try to contribute when I can.

Hi Al,

No problem.
I have no clue where on the planet you are...

Head straight north about 350 miles. Stop a few miles before you hit Canada.

Once any additional user accounts have been created, the
Administrator account will no longer be displayed on the Welcome
Screen. This is a default security feature. By design, the only way
to log into the Administrator account of WinXP Home is to reboot into
Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the Welcome
Screen will produce the standard login dialog box.

What if I only want the admninsitrator user and no others? What happens when
you get to the screen to create a user during the Win XP installation
process. Can you skip it?

Sorry about the idiot double post. Hit some unknown key.
Anyway, I have WIN XP HOME and have two user accounts and
two Administrator accounts and nothing like what you are
describing has ever happened to me. Maybe I'm missing
something , which would'nt be a great stretch. By the way
both Admin accts have passwords,as does one user acct and
I thought that was the way this XP thing was supposed to
act, but maybe it is only showing pity for an idiot.

Probably. I've never tried, as having only the single
Administrator account on a workstation is a serious security faux pas.

You have two account named "Administrator?" That shouldn't be
possible.

The two Administrator accounts on your machine that you mention are
accounts that are members of the administrator group. Very different than
what is being discussed.

The account that Ronnie and Rick are referring to is a default built in
account that is created by Windows setup when XP Pro or XP Home is
installed. This account not only belongs to the administrator group but it
also goes by the username of "Administrator."

XP Home handles this account differently than XP Pro and it is only
available for logon when you start the system in Safe Mode.

Thank you for clearing that up for me Sharon F.
Guess I just began reading before I put on
my 'STUPID'sign. Maybe it's not such a bad idea to make a
requirement to take computer classes, before one can
purchase a computer.

You're welcome and no problem. There are so many similar terms that it's
easy to mix them up when first becoming familiar with them. Also the
differences in Home and Pro are not always pointed out as clearly as they
could be in the documentation.
