Hello gamers,

I had decided to skip the X800 / GF6800 generation and be happy with the
9800XT, but as time passes, the 9800XT is doomed to go to the in-laws
computer (where I often play while I am there), and my own computer
starts to ask me for a faster card.

I am not changing CPU or mobo for now, the Abit IC7 and 3.2 Prescott are
happy together.

I have heard the X800 exists in a AGP flavour ? Anyone know where I can
find one in Europe ? Even a used one would be good enough to pass the
summer before a bigger upgrade happens.

Thank you in advance

Lorenzo

You talking about the X800XL? I wish I knew too. I usually buy my gear
at www.ncix.com and they have lots of X800XL's but not one in an AGP
flavour. They sell Sapphire and I know for a fact Sapphire make the
X800XL in AGP. Think I'll give them a call and ask them why they are
not selling them in AGP. I'm not changing my IC7 mb just for a vid
card either. I can get a 6800GT in AGP no problem but Nvidia has too
many driver issues in some of the games I play right now and it looks
like their cards need beefier PSU's too and I don't want to see my
poor Zalman 400w crap out on me.

SOLD OUT

They are charging $41.00 more for the AGP version. I made a post about
this fact just before I read this post. I'm not falling for this scam
job. The two cards perform exactly the same so why should I have to
pay more money for the AGP version? **** them, I'll go back to Nvidia.
I can get a 6800GT for $415.99 (after $30.00 rebate). The 6800GT is a
faster card anyway.

my mistake..thought it was just a 6800....just watch the XFX...have heard
lot's of complaints about them..

Well probably mostly because the AGP version uses an AGP bridge chip as
the X800 is a PCI-express native. I didn't bother to look at your links
but brand differences might also come into play (different brands=diff
prices) and maybe volume issues (the AGP cards are probably less
popular).

Similarly many AGP versions of 6800 cards are cheaper then PCI-express
variants because they also need a bridge chip.

Supply and demand. Obviously more people are after the AGP card in the
retail market.

BTW, the AGP bridge chip should not cost board manufacturers more than $5...

Is it? In Far Cry? EQ2? Anyway, this is the beauty of having two companies
producing competitive chipsets - you get a choice.

Yea, the 6800GT outperforms in many games but the X800XL may take a
few benchmarks. What I've noticed is it that if you are into flight
sims and run your games at 1024x768 32 bit with no FSAA or AF a
9800pro performs about the same as an X800XL anyway. It's only when
you bump up the FSAA and AF and resolution that these newer generation
cards show their stuff. I run all my games at 1024x768 and I can't be
bothered to fart around with FSAA+AF settings so I may be wiser to sit
on my 9800pro for another generation and see what the next gen has to
offer.

Two ways of the looking at this. Flight sims and driving games also benefit
the most from FSAA and AF, because the action is slower than first-person
shooters, the view distance is farther, and the textures tend to be crisper.
The jagged edges are quite noticeable in, for example, Pacific Fighters.
