Nate

For some reason, I can not access the on-line WSJ (Wall
Street Journal) on my home PC. I can access it on PCs
away from the home PC.

I suspect the inability to access the on-line WSJ at home
is due to some virus, pest, or Internet malfeasance.
This problem started in early Nov 2004, around the same
time that my home PC got hit with about every pest, virus
and disturbance known to the Internet. I have been
digging out ever since. This WSJ-thing is really
annoying as I enjoy my subscription and would like to
read it on-line.

Does anyone have any pointers on how to fix this?

Look in the hosts file.

Nate- if you have installed Microsoft (beta) Antispyware, you can go to
Tools, advanced tools, system explorers, and find Windows Host file under
networking in the left column.

/begin rant
(note to self and Microsoft--Why must everything be prefaced with Microsoft
and Windows?--a hosts file is a hosts file whether it is on a Mac or a Linux
box. The fact that it is on a Windows box does not make it a Windows hosts
file--it is still just a "hosts" file. A Windows hosts file is called
LMHOSTS.)
end rant/

I deactivated the host files in Spyware, and I still can
not access the WSJ.

There is an "unknown" BHO (browser helper object) on my
PC. Details on the path are:windows/system32/wtafbdtc.dll

The "BHO Name" is {FE514E1F-D98A-DD76-D16E-861DF162189F}

Could this be causing the WSJ problem?

I don't know the answer to that, but it sure is worth getting rid of.

Please restart your system in Safe mode (press F8 regularly before the
splash screen comes up.)

Once started in that mode, run Microsoft Antispyware, and set it to do a
Full scan. Scan until a scan comes through clean--i.e. at least twice.

If the scanner doesn't remove this object you can block or remove it
directly using the system agents.

What kind of Internet connection do you use? Did WSJ ever work for you,
with the current Internet connection, at this machine?
