Hi Group,
i recently have got from a previous magazine the last freeware version 6.0
of WS-FTP.
This version drops me after only a couple of minutes of inactivity.
I could not find any setting to extend this delay to, say, 15 minutes.
Has anyone got a clue?

Thanks
Michel

i have ws-ftp pro 7, but on the connect window under advanced settings you
can find gizmos there for extending timers

Just rustled up a copy and as far as I can see there are no easily
accessible options for keeping sessions alive - you should also be aware
that this can be a server side setting, so you may be dropped after 5
minutes of inactivity regardless of whether your client supports keep
alives or not.

IMHO, WS_FTP LE is horrendously dated and lacking in a lot of features.
There are plenty of other free clients out there which are much more
comfortable if you are a regular FTP user. My own preference is for
UltraFXP - it has a nice GUI, great set of features and definitely
supports keep alive options. UltraFXP has now morphed into a shareware
app called FTPRush, but you can still find the free version of UltraFXP
if you look around most of the larger file download sites.

I very much agree.

Also agreed, but I would recommend the open source FileZilla.

I very much agree.

And also has a very "obscure" licensing arrangement.

As would I.

I ditched WS_FTP LE for the clear open license and ongoing development of
FileZilla.

Try Filezilla...

Same here.

I'd used WS_FTP LE for years, ending with v5.08. Filezilla's interface
is easier for me to move around in and (re-)connections appear to happen
more quickly. That actively developed under open sauce is icing on the
cake.

I very much agree.

It would be nice if either/both of you said what these "features" are.

One only misses a "feature" if it is something that they want to use.

Ok, I'll bite.

I wasn't trying to start some kind of FTP client holy war. For a start
WS_FTP is missing any keep-alive options which I would have considered
critical in recommending a different application since it was something
the OP specifically wanted to use.

It also lacks scheduling, security (SSL support), any options for
skipping specific filetypes, speed controls, filetype highlighting,
priorities, any options for automatically checking downloads, a decent
set of 'file exists' rules, any quick connect options and has a non
standard GUI that appears to have fallen straight off of Windows 3.11.

If you don't want anything more than basic FTP functionality it beats
using FTP.exe from the command line, but that's about it.

Okay, I have never needed/used a keep-alive option in an FTP client.
When I have used a keep-alive program it has run all the time. Not
only when ftping.

Never needed those either.

Okay, thank you for the detailed reply. It is much clearer now why you
might like a different client.

Regards, John.
