Wrong numbers for downloaded news

When I download new postings for newsgroups, I get the message "Downloading
message x from y", where x is always greater than y. Which seems to be
wrong. In Ooulook Express under Windows XP always is x = y.

How can that be explained?

The "y" is just an estimate and is usually wrong.
